If I like a book, I tell you. If I don't, I tell you that, too. I have included some books here because people have asked me what I think about them, not because I like them.
To order any book, click on the picture of the book or on "buy now", beside the picture. This will take you directly to that book in Amazon.com, where you can click on "Add to my shopping cart". Books about holistic care and feeding of dogs and cats
Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats,
by Dr. Richard Pitcairn and his wife Susan.
The "bible" of holistic care for dogs and cats.
Buy now
This book has all the basics, from basic care (including the raw food diet) to treatments for various ailments. If you can only start with one book, this is it. This book covers a lot, and Dr. Pitcairn's specialty is homeopathy, so for more depth in specific areas (such as herbal therapy), you will need to expand your library to other books.
The New Natural Cat
by Anitra Frazier
The second most important book for cat owners.
Buy now
Anitra has taken Dr. Pitcairn's approach, and added things especially appropriate to cats. (Like how you get finicky ones to eat a proper diet.) The section on bribe foods is worth the price of the book.
The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog
by Wendy Volhard and Kerry L. Brown Another book of basic care
Buy now
This book is not as complete as Dr. Pitcairn's, but it adds a little to what he says.
Natural Food Recipes for Healthy Dogs
by Carol Boyle
A whole book of recipes, when you're tired of the same old stand-bys.

Cat Care, Naturally by Celeste Yarnall
Very complete, but flawed in several ways.
Buy now
Celeste has made the mistake common to many of believing that a cat's system is a miniature version of ours. Her comments on diet are straight from recommendations for humans, in spite of the fact that cats have many differences, such as their liver's inability to detoxify substances we have no problems with, and their higher need for protein. She repeats the old saw about not using homeopathy with acupuncture. Though very extensive, her reference site has some glaring omissions (like me, for instance). If you want to round out your cat library, this book has more complete references than any other.
Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats by Diane Stein
An interesting book on holistic care
Buy now
Diane has some interesting ideas. Some are a little too far out, even for me. If you want to round out your library of holistic care, this one does add some useful information.

Specific forms of treatment
Four Paws, Five Directions by Cheryl Schwartz
Chinese medicine: five elements theory, Chinese herbs, and acupressure treatment
Buy now
Dr. Schwartz's book is so complete that it can be used as a textbook for veterinarians. Her descriptions of the five elements theory and using it to determine a Chinese diagnosis is easy enough for owners to use. The charts of points are sometimes not quite aligned with the real points, but one of the advantages of acupressure is that if you're in the general area, you will get at least some of the benefit. This is a very useful book for anyone interested in Chinese medicine.
The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat
by Juliette De Bairacli Levy Herbal medicine for dogs and cats
Buy now
The book that got herbal medicine rolling for small animals. This book is primarily for dogs.
Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements by Michael Murray, ND
A little bit about most nutritional supplements. Written for humans.
Buy now
A good reference book for people interested in nutritional therapy. Just keep in mind that most of these are useful for dogs, but cats process things differently. When in doubt, ask a holistic veterinarian who has a special interest in nutritional supplements.
Prescription for Nutritional Healing: A Practical A-Z Reference to Drug-Free Remedies Using Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & Food Supplements by James F. Balch, Phyllis A. Balch
Written for humans.
Buy now
Look up a problem, see all the nutrients that can help.
Another good reference book for anyone interested in nutritional therapy. Just be careful with cats.
Prescription for Nutritional Healing A-To-Z Guide to Supplements: A Handy Resource to Today's Most Effective Nutritional Supplements by James F. Balch, Phyllis A. Balch
Warning!
Buy now
This is just a reprint of Part 1 of Prescription for Nutritional Healing. Don't buy it thinking it's a cheaper version of the same thing. It doesn't contain the most useful parts (what nutrients are good for which ailments).
Homeopathy
Christopher Day's book is probably the most useful book on homeopathy for small animals that I have used. Unfortunately, it's out of print. If you order it, Amazon.com will try to find a used copy for you. I have put it at the end of this section for this reason.
